Puku is the native African name for the Kobus vardonii, a medium-sized, golden-brown antelope that lives in the wet grasslands and floodplains of Central and Southern Africa.
The famous missionary and explorer Dr. David Livingstone first documented the animal along the Zambezi River in Zambia around 1853. He recorded "poku" (or puku) as the local indigenous name used by the people of the region.
