Cast by the Tikar tribe in West Cameroon where it is worn during wedding ceremonies.
According to Tikar oral history, their ancestors originally migrated from the Nile River Valley in present-day Sudan centuries ago. In these early days, the Tikar were a nomadic group whose daily lives revolved around cattle grazing, horse riding, and herding. Even though they transitioned into structured, sedentary kingdoms and practiced agriculture in the grasslands of Cameroon, cattle remain a living symbol of their historical journey and ancestral heritage.
Like many early pastoralist and agricultural societies across Central and East Africa, cattle represent stored material wealth. Because they are a highly valued commodity, owning cattle elevates a family's social standing within the kingdom, providing nutrition and security during times of poor crop yields.
