Hand-carved wooden and bone combs from the Bamun people of the Cameroon Grasslands are traditional status objects imbued with cultural and spiritual symbolism.
In their hierarchical society, intricately carved grooming items like hair combs and hairpins functioned as personal adornments and markers of prestige. Artisans carve these wooden or bone pieces with symbolic motifs, including human faces, double faces, or animals such as lions and fish.
