Hand-cast with the lost wax method in Burkina Faso, these bronze sculptures beautifully capture the elegance and grace of femininity.
Lost wax casting is an ancient, complex method of creating intricate metal objects by first making a detailed wax model, then encasing it in a mold (often plaster), subsequently heating the mold to melt or “lose” the wax. Molten metal is then poured into the space left by the wax. After the metal cools and solidifies, the outer mold is broken, revealing a one-of-a-kind replica of the wax figure. The oldest known examples of this technique are the objects discovered in the Cave of Treasure hoard in southern Israel, which belong to the Chalcolithic Period (4500 - 3500 BCE).
