| Jambo!
Welcome to the premiere issue of The Amazwi Voice., the newsletter for Amazwi Contemporary Art based in Saugatuck, Michigan. One of the most frequently asked questions we get is , "What does Amazwi Mean?" The word means "voices" and is used by the Zulu and Ndebele tribes of southern Africa. The mission of Amazwi is to give voice to the hugely talented group of artists working in Africa today. Up to now our focus has been on Kenya, Tanzania and Sudan in the East, to Ghana in the West and South Africa and Zimbabwe in the South. This newsletter will keep our most enthusiastic patrons up-to-date on new work, new and favorite artists and special events. Thank you for finding your voice at Amazwi.

| Spotlight on Kenya |
|
|
On the heels of it's disputed presidential election
in late December. Kenya experienced violent protests
in certain parts of the country. While daily life
proceeds as normal in much of the capital city
of Nairobi, concern about the volatile political
situation resulted in several travel warnings to Kenya.
Hopefully these will be lifted soon since the two
rival political parties have recently brokered a power-sharing
agreement. We had originally planned a return trip
to Kenya in January 2008 since Kenyan art has struck
such a responsive chord with our customers, but we
ultimately decided, extremely reluctantly, not to
return there this trip. We contacted many
of our artists to make sure they were safe and we
were able to meet with several of them in neighboring
Tanzania instead. They need our support more than
ever and we continue to explore ways we can help from
afar.

| 2008 Buying Trip |

Talk about ambitious! Or maybe crazy? On March 7, we flew into Johannesburg, South Africa for the weekend before heading to Harare, Zimbabwe. We capped off six days in Zimbabwe with a visit to the Eastern Highlands for some game viewing. From there we flew to Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, a whole new market for us. The next stop was Arusha, Tanzania, flying into Kilimanjaro Airport. Our last stop was Kampala, the capital of Uganda, another brand new market for Amazwi where we met some very talented artists. We'll unveil part of our 2008 collection at our 4th(!) anniversary celebration on May 3rd. |

| Take a Spring Break!
After a long, cold, snowy winter, isn't it time for a day trip or weekend getaway? Stop in and enjoy our current exhibition featuring two gallery favorites. We're calling the show: "From A-Z: New Works by Abel Mutsadyanga and Zack Aswani". Abel is from Zimbabwe and his wildlife portraits are whimsical and charming. Zack if from Kenya and his Maasai paintings are rich in texture and powerful in mood. |
