As recently as Nov. 6, we received another e-mail from our friend Liz Nugent writing from Harare on the heels of the U.S. presidential election.

""I must say, it   was nerve-racking the few days before the election not knowing how it could go but the results were perfect with such a majority.  We are so envious.  It would break your heart here at the moment;  whatever you do or give is never enough,  the need for everyone is so great and the cost of living in US$ terms is off the scale," said Liz.

With meat and the most basic of staples considered to be  unattainable luxuries in today's Zimbabwe, many have asked us how they might help.

If you would like to bring some joy  and relief to people in dire need, we recommend visiting;
There you can order meat and/or baskets of basic supplies that Liz will deliver to struggling artists and their families.

Ordering is easy.  Just  indicate that Liz be notified when the goods you have ordered are ready for pick-up.  Her contact information follows:

Fall 2008
Jambo!

As 2008 barrels towards the holidays, we wanted to thank all of our loyal customers, many of whom have become good friends, for a fantastic year to date. We celebrated our 4th Anniversary, held another successful fundraiser for Solar Circle, hosted a Waterfront Film Festival "wrap party," and donated a percentage of sales and/or space and/or art to such wonderful organizations as the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, Mason Street Warehouse, the Children's Film Festival and Wings of Hope Hospice, among others.

One of our proudest achievements was an artists' workshop held over three days in mid-September that was organized by our good friend Elizabeth Nugent in Zimbabwe, a country that is facing tremendous hardship, including runaway hyper-inflation that has made day-to-day life a struggle for virtually the entire country. With the economy in shambles, Liz and two of our favorite artists used money that we had raised at Amazwi to provide young artists with the materials they needed to start painting again. We and our good friends Nancy and Leila at Dumela (they inspired our gallery and passion for African art) also donated meat, which is in very short supply there, to the cause. Below you can read an excerpt from an e-mail that Liz sent which describes, with compassion and enthusiasm, the details surrounding this special event.

Ever humble, Liz deserves an enormous amount of credit for the support she has offered to so many Zim artists over the years. She is an inspiration.  When we were in Harare ourselves in March, we gave painting supplies to many of the artists we represent. That felt really good. Upon receiving an assortment of paintbrushes from us, Petros Kaseke said; "God Bless Amazwi." That blessing also applies to Liz and to Dumela and to you, our customers, because we literally couldn't do any of this without you. Your support of Amazwi is truly making a tremendous difference in the lives of scores of artists and their families often living in very difficult circumstances.  Thank you so much for that.

E-mail From Liz

September 17, 2008

"Chatting to Powell Matsongoni and Tendai Makufa, we came up with the idea of a workshop at the BAT National Gallery in Mbare and we went down to the school. The students are over the moon as they are very demoralized with the fact they have so little supplies and have to buy their own brushes. The brushes are the biggest thing as they have so few and no money to buy new ones. What is happening this week is that there will be a three-day workshop with students coming from other schools and they will be all eating Mukuru meat thanks to Amazwi and Dumela. I have supplied meali meal, tomatoes, onions, oil, rape and mazoe orange so they can be fed. Many of the students have to sleep on the floor of the classrooms because they do not have the bus fare to come and go.

Handed over the money for art supplies and the meats to the lads yesterday and will be meeting them today with more goodies. They were so sweet and told me I will be amazed at what is going on and will get a big surprise on Thursday....they are all so excited thanks to Dumela and Amazwi.

Yesterday was wonderful. I went to the Gallery to give more stuff to Powell and Tendai and we were off-loading and they were going to carry it and get a bus to the school. I said, get in and I will take you. They could not contain themselves because it was to be a surprise but the theme for the three day workshop is the meaning of the words Amazwi ("voice") and Dumela ("hello"). When we got there it was as if someone had put on a light. There was a buzz around the little garden which was filled with students working away. They had paper, paint and brushes. The boys say they still have brushes to give for presents. I think it will certainly be like the loaves and fishes but they said they got plenty. It is very hard for you to imagine, or any of us, but these young people have not had meat for months.

Can you believe this little school has not had any paint for the whole year? Can't see how that works. Powell and Tendai are very excited and proud as they feel they are giving back something to their old school. They have worked so hard.

Your ears will be burning on Thursday. It will be well worth the wait and we will have lots of photos for you to put on your website if you like. When I arrived yesterday the only way I could describe it was like a before and after. One picture in black and white and then the same picture in living colour. I can't tell you how good it felt driving out and thinking that so little did so much for these smart young people who have soooo little and work so hard."

Ho-Ho-Holiday Magic!

The local business community has several events scheduled in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Join us Friday, Nov.21 for the Saugatuck Annual Holiday Preview, which kicks off five weeks of Festive Fridays (see event calendar). Stores will be open at least until 9 p.m. each night. Enjoy holiday refreshments, decor, carriage rides, carolers and special offers.

From Nov. 21-30, look for businesses that have a special "Candy Cane" marker in their window. Pick up a Santa Map in any store, which will guide shoppers through "Candy Cane Lane." Find the "hidden Candy Cane" in each business and receive a punch on your map. Buy something and receive an extra punch. The more stores you visit, the better the chances of winning four First Place prizes of $100 in SABA Bucks or four Second Place Prizes of $50 in SABA Bucks (SABA is the Saugatuck-Douglas Area Business Association). SABA Bucks will be treated like real money at any of the participating businesses.

When you drop off your completed map for the prize drawing, you will also receive a candy cane ornament, courtesy of SABA.
